Derry were deservingly crowned Division 2 champions at the end of a highly entertaining game in which the final scoreline is more than a little flattering to The Oak Leaf county. The sides were level going into injury time and Pat Flanagan’s men were live contenders to collect their fourth ever division 2 title but it was Derry who hit 1-3 without reply to seal matters.

Westmeath make the long and difficult trip to Celtic Park, Derry this Sunday safe in the knowledge that losing their unbeaten tag is about all that is at stake. With promotion secured and given that it is very likely the same teams that will be contesting the division 2 final on April 28 it is not surprising that Pat Flanagan has opted to rest many of his regulars.

A gutsy 0-16 to 2-9 opening round win over Louth last Sunday was the perfect start to the new season for Pat Flanagan’s side who look well placed to collect another valuable brace of league points when they make the short journey to Pearse Park, Longford this Sunday.

For the third year running Louth are the opposition as Westmeath begin their league campaign. This time last year remaining in division 2 was the main and seemingly doubtful goal. Twelve months on and the mood is far more optimistic with promotion a definite prospect if the team hit form. With that said there are no easy games in division 2.

Mullingar Shamrocks will be hoping it is a case of third time lucky as they booked their place in the county senior decider for the third year running thanks to a 3-7 to 1-10 win over neighbours St Loman’s last Sunday.

The replay of the all-Mullingar county semi-final is scheduled for this Sunday evening at 5.15pm in Cusack Park. If this game is half as entertaining as the drawn encounter, it will be well worth the admission fee and given the local rivalry a decent attendance is expected.

It’s semi-final time in the Westmeath senior football championship with two very interesting games down for decision this Sunday in Cusack Park. Holders Garrycastle take on surprise packet Maryland at 2.30pm followed by the all-Mullingar clash of St Loman’s and Shamrocks at 4pm.

There was plenty of drama and a few surprises too as a full schedule of round three games were played in the Westmeath senior football championship last weekend. While Maryland made it three wins out of three in group B and Tyrrellspass and Garrycastle recorded important wins in division A, the big winners from the weekend were Bunbrosna and St Malachy’s.

It is surely a case of nothing to lose and everything to gain as Westmeath welcome Kerry to Cusack Park on Sunday for round two of the all-Ireland qualifiers. Nobody, diehards included, are giving Pat Flanagan’s men a chance and the consensus is that it is only a matter of by how much will the Kingdom reign supreme.
